AUCTION DATE

At around 5:30 pm on Saturday, January 18, there will be a magic moment at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. That’s when the very first 2020 mid-engine Corvette C8, chassis 001, will go on the auction block. All proceeds from the sale will go to charity, to the Detroit Children’s Fund, which works to improve schools and education in Detroit, Michigan.

At Scottsdale In 2018, Barrett-Jackson auctioned a 2017 Ford GT and a 2019 Mustang Bullitt (also a VIN 001 car) to bring in $2.85 million for charity.

The C8 is, of course, the first Corvette with its engine behind the cockpit. It certainly looks the part — with designers keeping all the critical visual clues from the Corvette’s past — but now with the emphasis shifted to the rear of the vehicle. Best of all, the V-8 engine is on view through a rear hatch window. There are trunks in both the front and back, the latter being large enough to hold a golf bag.

The cockpit was designed with the driver’s comfort as a priority, and built with an enclosure, courtesy of a short wall separating the pilot from their passenger. Ahead of the car seats is a digital dashboard, and off to the right side a large infotainment screen is displayed. All controls are intuitive and within easy reach, ensuring less time spent looking away from the road.

Under the body is an entirely new structure that is more than 10% stiffer than previous Corvettes and includes new suspensions.

The engine Chevrolet likes to mention is the ZR1 version of the 6.2-liter V-8 engine that pumps out 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. These features empower the car to go from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds while on the way to a 194 mph top speed. It’s estimated the C8 is good for more than 1.0 g on the skidpad.

What a package!  And to have VIN 001 stamped on it just adds to the desirability. We are anxiously awaiting to see the bid price when the hammer falls.
