Rust. Wit. Mayhem.

That’s what the 2019 Concours d’Lemons offered up to those who walked the green at Seaside City Hall this past weekend. As you walk around the grounds, a strange yet amusing cocktail of metal and cheeky objects fuse together to create what resemble cars but with a twist. A truck with integrated BBQ grill. The vintage farm vehicle complete with horns and cow affixed. The clever sticker of a check engine symbol with the caption, “this little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.” Indeed, that was probably the only working light on what I think, peering through the zombie-themed exoskeleton, was an early-model Nissan Altima. aptly named The Altimatum.

The personality of d’Lemons shines down directly from the organizers, grouping cars in remarkably descriptive and accurate categories including Needlessly Complex Italian, Rust Belt American, Unmitigated Gaul, and Kommunist Kars. I easily laughed more in an hour at Concours d’ Lemons than I did the entire rest of Monterey Car Week. Perhaps the best part of Lemons is the purity of the gathering. It’s where clever and artistic people enjoy each others’ company and artistic statements. This was the one event during the week where people culture triumphed car culture.
